The annual event is one of ESPN’s signature telecasts of the summer, and this year it will include more coverage than ever, starting on-site at 3 p.m. The Home Run Derby will consist of an eight-player bracket, with four head-to-head matchups in the first round, two head-to-head matchups in the semifinals, and one final round between the two finalists. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round. Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals. As the event traditionally takes place at sunset where the sun is of no factor to the batter, they can choose to wear their hat casually and backwards.

Max Muncy and Javier Baez have a lot in common, as they both are capable of playing multiple positions around the infield, and their teams utilize that versatility. The two have also showed the ability to handle the bat, and they're both on pace for 30-plus home runs. In a Home Run Derby without many superstars, Harper stands out as the biggest name in the competition.

This year’s event follows the same eight-man, head-to-head format used by the league over the past few years. Schwarber flashed that prototypical power swing to push 14 home runs before earning a 30-second bonus. He’s already done better than either Anthony Rizzo or Kris Bryant did before getting eliminated in 2015.

Kyle Schwarber set a great pace with 18 in his final round, including one in bonus time. Schwarber ends his night with 55 home runs in three rounds, the second-highest total in derby history. That looked like too much for Harper, but he rallied with nine home runs in the final minute to tie Schwarber, then blasted a walk-off in extra time to win the trophy. In each round, each batter will receive four minutes to hit as many home runs as possible, with no limit on outs or swings.

Each player will be allowed to take one timeout during the first round and the semifinals, and the two players in the final will be granted two timeouts. Eight players participate in the derby in a bracket-style, single-elimination timed event. Each player has four minutes to hit as many home runs as possible. Hitters are awarded an additional 30 seconds if they hit two home runs over 440 feet . Hitters are also allowed one 45 second timeout to stop the clock . Harper rallied to beat Kyle Schwarber in the final round

ESPNEWS will televise a first-of-its-kind alternative viewing experience for this event, driven largely by on-screen graphics, data and information from Statcast. This telecast will include its own commentator team, including play-by-play voice Jason Benetti and analyst Eduardo Perez. Javy Baez and Kyle Schwarber of the Cubs highlight this year’s field, which also includes Jesus Aguilar, Bryce Harper, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, Alex Bregman and Rhys Hoskins. Those players have combined to hit 156 home runs so far this season, and they should keep busy Monday firing balls all over the park. The derby was first nationally televised by ESPN in 1993 on a same-day delayed basis, with the first live telecast in 1998. Although two hours are scheduled in programming listings for the telecast, it has rarely ever been contained to the timeslot and consistently runs three to four hours.

In 2006, the selection of four players from each league resumed. In 2011, the format was revised so that team captains selected the individual sides. In 2000, a "match play"-style format was instituted for the second round. The player with the most home runs in the first round faced the player with the least among the four qualifying players, as did the players with the second- and third-most totals.
