Players can earn bonus time with long home runs and they’re entitled to a certain number of timeouts. Weather concerns in 2015 led to a reduction in time from five minutes per round to four minutes. The clock was not stopped in the final minute, and one minute of bonus time was granted only for hitting two home runs of at least 425 feet (129.5 m). The oldest player ever to compete in the Derby, Pujols might have been the sentimental favorite, but he was hardly the favorite to win a contest that rewards stamina as much as raw power.

The annual event is one of ESPN’s signature telecasts of the summer, and this year it will include more coverage than ever, starting on-site at 3 p.m. The Home Run Derby will consist of an eight-player bracket, with four head-to-head matchups in the first round, two head-to-head matchups in the semifinals, and one final round between the two finalists. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round. Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals. This year’s event follows the same eight-man, head-to-head format used by the league over the past few years. Schwarber flashed that prototypical power swing to push 14 home runs before earning a 30-second bonus. He’s already done better than either Anthony Rizzo or Kris Bryant did before getting eliminated in 2015.
Kyle Schwarber set a great pace with 18 in his final round, including one in bonus time. Schwarber ends his night with 55 home runs in three rounds, the second-highest total in derby history. That looked like too much for Harper, but he rallied with nine home runs in the final minute to tie Schwarber, then blasted a walk-off in extra time to win the trophy. In each round, each batter will receive four minutes to hit as many home runs as possible, with no limit on outs or swings.
